Can't At All (Radio Edit)

Released April 15, 2022

When Kelly McMichael’s Waves album was released in May of 2021, Exclaim Magazine gave the record an 8/10. Alex Hudson of Exclaim said that “McMichael and her co-producer Jake Nicoll have created a lush-sounding debut that weaves together several decades’ worth of sounds into a seamless pop-rock tapestry. It all feels familiar, yet it’s so timeless that it never seems dated.”

The album saw McMichael win two 2021 MusicNL awards for Rock Artist and Solo Artist of the Year. She’s since been nominated for three 2022 East Coast Music Awards, including a nod for Album of the Year.

As she gears up for a gala performance at this year’s East Coast Music Awards in Fredericton, NB, Kelly will be heading on the road across Canada as part of Sarah Harmer’s backing band.

The release of the radio edit of “Can’t At All” serves as a preview of the five new songs that will be released on Waves+, a deluxe version of the album. Waves+ is set for release on May 20, 2022 – the one year anniversary (minus a day) of the original release of Waves.

Says McMichael of “Can’t At All”:

Struggling with the balance between art and relationships, this is a cathartic celebration of femininity in the form of a power ballad. Bass-heavy synth grooves launch acrobatic vocals into questions about domestic pressures and expectations as an artist and woman. When does it become too self-indulgent to pursue art? Who is allowed to be consumed by it and what is the cost? I’m examining influences, gender, and questioning where I fit in, and where I would like to be.

Kelly McMichael is known for her commanding stage presence, striking voice and compelling songwriting. She has a fierce and versatile ability for musical expression as a multi-instrumentalist and vocal chameleon. The new single is McMichael’s first release since signing to LHM Records earlier this year.
