"Overpass" (Single)

Released Mar. 24, 2023

The second single release from Pillow Fite since their debut EP, Flutter, came out in June of 2022. “Overpass” tackles mental health and depression head on, while working hard to dig through and find a crack to let the light in.

Says singer Art Ross, about “Overpass”:

‘Overpass’ is the daydreaming narrative of an experience I had on Christmas Day. It’s not exactly a Christmas song, but the randomness of the date and imagery creates the context of the story. While I was driving up the 401 on my way out of Toronto, I saw a couple on the overpass. The man was taking a photo of the woman as she posed on the concrete wall above the highway. This image stuck in my mind and I tried to create their life story, or a reasonable facsimile, through my perspective. There is something incredibly awkward, yet endearing about this image. I had many questions about how they got there. Who were they? Why the bridge? Of course, the song is through a stranger’s perspective, so my narrative is fictional.  Nonetheless, this fleeting image enticed me to create these linear lyrics like a story instead of a poem; similar to Suzanne Vega’s ‘Queen and a Soldier’ or Phoebe Bridgers ‘Punisher’. When I brought the lyrics to Aaron, he paired it with an eerie mix of synth and piano, leaving the guitar until later and letting the vocal take the spotlight until just before the refrain crescendos in the outro. The musical landscape is striving to stand in for the cold, early morning northern Ontario expanse. In so far as this is a song about Christmas and not a ‘Christmas Song,’ we drew a lot of influence from Phoebe’s So Much Wine EP of somewhat seasonal covers.
